What you can expect from Coil and Coil Away, and what we ask of you, in plain words.

Who we are

Coil is made and sold by KnowBout Ltd, registered in England and Wales, company number 17325238, registered office Suite RA01, 195–197 Wood Street, London E17 3NU. Coil is an independent app, not made, sponsored or endorsed by Tesla, Inc. or Garmin Ltd. To reach us, email support@coilkey.com.

The Coil app

Coil is free to download from Garmin's Connect IQ Store, and free to use for a day from when your watch becomes a key. To keep using the car's controls after that, you buy a licence once, at coilkey.com/unlock: £9.99 for one watch or £14.99 for two, or the price shown in dollars or euros. A licence unlocks Coil, and its updates, on that many of your own watches at a time, for your own cars. You can move it to a new watch whenever you like, with your licence key; the watch it leaves stops working with Coil's controls within a day. Reinstalling Coil on the same watch doesn't use up a licence.

You can have a full refund within 48 hours of buying: email us. When you buy, you ask us to unlock Coil straight away and agree that your 14-day right to cancel ends once it's unlocked; the 48-hour refund is our own promise on top. A refunded licence stops unlocking watches, and watches it unlocked lock again within a week.

In the UK, you buy the licence from KnowBout Ltd, and Stripe takes the payment. Elsewhere, it's sold to you through Onelink, Stripe's merchant of record service, which takes the payment, charges any tax due where you live, and sends your receipt, under its own terms; you can ask Onelink for a refund too. Either way, the price includes any tax, your licence key is on your receipt, and we never see your card.

Coil adds your watch as a key with your car's permission: the car accepts it only after you tap your key card and confirm on its screen. You can remove the key at any time, in the car under Controls, Locks, or in Coil's menu.

Coil Away

Coil Away is an optional plan that lets your watch reach your car through your phone's internet connection when you are away from it. Beside the car, Coil uses Bluetooth, which needs no plan.

  • Plans and allowances. Each plan comes with a monthly allowance of commands, status refreshes and wake-ups, shown on the pricing page and on your watch. Allowances start again on the first day of each month (UTC). Unused allowance doesn't carry over.
  • Paying. You pay by card through Stripe, monthly or yearly, in advance. Your plan renews automatically until you cancel.
  • Cancelling. Cancel at any time on your account page, under Manage plan. Coil Away keeps working until the end of the period you have paid for, and you won't be charged again.
  • Your right to change your mind. You can cancel within 14 days of first subscribing for a full refund. If you have used Coil Away in that time, we refund the part of the period you haven't used. Email us to ask.
  • Price changes. We will tell you at least 30 days before a price changes. The new price applies from your next renewal, and you can cancel before then.
  • What Coil Away depends on. Coil Away reaches your car through Tesla's Fleet API, your phone and Garmin Connect, which we don't control. We work to keep it running, but can't promise it will always be available, or that your car will always answer. If Tesla withdraws what Coil Away needs, we will refund the unused part of your plan.

Using Coil safely

  • Coil can unlock your car and open it from a distance. Keep your watch locked with a passcode, and remove Coil's key from the car if you lose the watch.
  • Check the car before you leave it: if Coil says it got no answer, the command may still have been carried out.
  • Keep your key card or phone with you to drive. Don't use Coil while driving.
  • Use Coil only with cars you are allowed to use, and only lawfully.

If something goes wrong

If Coil or Coil Away doesn't work as described, email us and we will put it right or refund you. We are responsible for loss or damage that is a foreseeable result of our breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. We are not responsible for loss that wasn't foreseeable, for business losses, or for problems caused by Tesla, Garmin, your phone or your connection. Nothing in these terms limits our liability where the law doesn't allow it, such as for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud.

Ending

You can delete your Coil Away account at any time on the account page, once your plan is cancelled. We may suspend a Coil Away account that is used to harm others or to overload the service, and will tell you why.

Changes and the law

We may update these terms, for example when Coil gains new features. We will tell Coil Away subscribers about any change that matters to them before it takes effect. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales; if you live elsewhere in the UK or the EU, you keep the protections of your local law, and you can bring a claim in your local courts.
