Privacy

Coil's Bluetooth key keeps what it knows on your watch. This page says exactly what that is.

Last updated 2 October 2026

The short version

The Bluetooth key needs no account. It talks to your car over Bluetooth, and to us only to unlock itself after its free day and to check its licence once a week, with nothing about you or your car. Coil Away, which is optional, needs an account; it is described below.

What stays on your watch

  • Your car's VIN, which you type into Coil's settings in Garmin Connect. Coil uses it to address every message to your car.
  • Coil's key. The watch makes it during setup. The private half never leaves the watch.
  • Your car's model and colour, as you chose them, to draw your car.
  • What Coil last heard from your car: the battery, the locks and when, for Home and the glance.
  • Your car's Bluetooth identity, so the watch can find it again.

Removing Coil from your watch deletes all of this. To take the key off the car as well, delete it under Controls, Locks in the car.

What we receive

Nothing from the Bluetooth key; for Coil Away, see below. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you send, and use them only to help you. If you send us a log from your watch to help us fix a problem, it can include your car's VIN and the messages between the watch and the car; we use it only for that problem and delete it once the problem is solved.

Buying and unlocking Coil

You download Coil from Garmin's Connect IQ Store; your Garmin account and Garmin Connect are covered by Garmin's own privacy policy. After the free day you buy a licence on this website. Stripe takes the payment (outside the UK, through Onelink, Stripe's merchant of record service, which has its own privacy policy), and we never see your card details. We keep your email address (from Stripe), to email you your licence key when you buy and whenever you ask for it again; your licence key, sealed so we can show it to you again; and which watches it unlocked, each by a token and by an ID the watch gives Coil (the same through reinstalls), both kept in a form that can't be turned back. The watch asks coilkey.com once a day whether its licence still holds.

To unlock, your watch asks us for a short code and then collects its licence, through your phone. Once a week it asks whether the licence still holds. These requests carry the code or the watch's token, and nothing about you or your car.

Coil Away

Coil Away is optional. If you use it, Coil's server keeps:

  • Your Tesla account's identifier, email address and region, from Tesla when you sign in.
  • Your Tesla sign-in, encrypted, so the server can ask Tesla to deliver your watch's commands, wake your car and read its status.
  • Your cars' names and VINs, as Tesla lists them.
  • Your linked watches: a token for each, kept in a form that can't be turned back into the token, and when each was last used.
  • Your plan, from Stripe: which plan, its status and when it renews. Stripe handles your card; we never see it.
  • How many commands, status refreshes and wake-ups you used each month, to apply the allowance.

Commands pass through the server on their way to Tesla and aren't stored. Each is signed by your watch, so the server can't send your car a command on its own.

The server runs on Cloudflare. Tesla delivers commands to your car and answers status requests, and Stripe takes payments; each has its own privacy policy. You can delete your Coil Away account on the account page at any time, which deletes everything above apart from the billing records Stripe must keep by law. To remove Coil's access on Tesla's side too, remove it in your Tesla account's security settings.
