One press, and the car opens.
Coil turns your Garmin into a key for your Tesla: lock, unlock, open the frunk and warm the cabin from your wrist, with no phone needed.
Free for a day, then £9.99 once. For Garmin fēnix, epix, Forerunner and Venu watches and Teslas with Phone Key.
A day without your phone
Coil talks to your car on its own, over Bluetooth: no phone, no signal and no account.
-
Park, and lock from your wrist
Walk away and press Lock. The watch shows the car is locked, and tells you if a door, the frunk or the trunk was left open.
-
Run, swim, ride or train
No phone to carry, drop or lose in a locker. Tuck your key card away: you'll want it to drive home.
-
Back, and straight in
Press Unlock as you walk up. Coil connects, unlocks and tells you it's done, usually in 6 to 13 seconds. Tap your card on the console and drive.
Every control on one dial
Press DOWN on Home and the Dial opens: eight controls round the bezel. UP and DOWN turn it and START does the one in focus. On the touchscreen, tap to pick and hold for two seconds to act.
A key you can trust
Coil works the way Tesla's own Phone Key does, and adds nothing in between.
-
Made on your watch, and it stays there
Coil creates its key on the watch the first time you set it up. The secret half never leaves the watch, not even to us.
-
Only you can add it
Your car accepts a new key only after you tap your key card on the centre console and press Confirm on its screen. That is Tesla's rule, and Coil can't get round it.
-
Signed the way Tesla signs
Every command uses Tesla's vehicle command protocol, the same system as Phone Key, and the car checks each one.
-
No account for the key
The Bluetooth key needs no account and no sign-in. It talks to your car directly, and to us only to unlock itself after its free day and to check its licence once a day, through your phone. Neither carries anything about you or your car.
-
Easy to remove
Remove the key from the watch's menu, and from the car's Locks screen, like any lost phone key.
Beside the car, or miles away.
With every licence
Beside the car: Bluetooth
Within about 10 metres of the car, Coil talks to it directly, usually in 6 to 13 seconds a command. It works in an underground car park, at the trailhead, anywhere with no signal, and it costs nothing to run.
From £2.99 a month
Away from it: Coil Away
An optional plan that reaches the car through your phone's connection, to check the charge from your desk or warm the car before you leave. Once the car is awake, a command takes a second or two. Near the car, Coil always uses Bluetooth, so the monthly allowance only goes on the times you're away. How Coil Away works

Teslas with Phone Key
- Model 3 and Model Y
- Model S and Model X, 2021 on
- Cybertruck
Built and tested on a Model 3. You need your key card once, to add the watch.
One price, once
Try it free for a day on your own car, then unlock it once, here. No subscription to use your car beside it, and no account.
Do I need my phone?
No. Coil talks to the car straight from the watch over Bluetooth. You need the phone to type your car's VIN into Garmin Connect when you set Coil up, and once more to unlock Coil after its free day. Coil Away, for when you're away from the car, works through your phone.
What if my watch runs out of battery?
Use your key card or the Tesla app, as you would without Coil. Keep the card somewhere safe for the day the watch is flat.
Can I drive with just my watch?
Not yet. Coil gets you in and works the car's controls, but to drive, the car wants a key it trusts inside: your key card tapped on the console, or your phone. Starting a drive from the watch is on our list.
Is Coil made by Tesla or Garmin?
No. Coil is an independent app that works with both. More questions
